Robert Piggott is an established Contemporary-Abstract
painter and printmaker, in Dunedin, New Zealand.
With over 40 solo shows and participation in numerous group exhibitions throughout New Zealand, he has also exhibited internationally.
He was awarded a Master of Fine Arts Degree with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2000.
Alongside a committed studio practice, Robert has been a teacher/educator for 35 years in Dunedin Primary, Intermediate and Secondary schools, and a lecturer in Art at the Dunedin College of Education. He retired as a Special Needs teacher at Kaikorai Valley College in 2020.
Robert opened his own gallery, the ROBERT PIGGOTT ART GALLERY in Dunedin’s Jetty Street; - mentoring, supporting and exhibiting local emergent artists from 2016 - 2023.
Throughout the years, Robert Piggott’s artwork has undergone continuous invention; - developing numerous explorative evolving styles, and series. He creates personal visual abstract statements. Yet he purposefully leaves them ‘open to interpretation’ by the viewer, as an ‘invitation’ to cherish the silent art of seeing.
At times, Piggott’s wide-ranging work has been linked by association to a variety of themes, including: Personal identity and memory, Philosophy, Music, Spirituality, Land and Place, along with the interweaving of his European/New Zealand/Asian cultural background and connections.
Articles on Piggott’s art have been published in the New Zealand literary magazine TAKAHE, and the internationally distributed ASIAN ART NEWS.
