The stories of colourful characters and out of the ordinary events that enrich our lives, fuel my imagination to create each collage work. The collage process reinforces the idea of bringing multiple personalities together in situations to create a new narrative. At first glance it may appear as a painted picture, but on closer inspection the work is an orchestration of many parts. The tactile pleasure of cutting and slicing paper and physically handling every little component satisfies my need to take chaos and turn it into order. This is fulfilled once glued into the composition and detailing is completed. The figures and objects are pared down and simplified, downloaded from memory rather than anatomically correct. I treasure tradition and celebrate what makes us human by finding humour or angst in both the mundane and the extraordinary which I inject into my images. Gemma Baldock
Mixed Media / Original Collage
750mm x 600mm
$2,500.00
Oh Deer captures a chaotic moment filled with familiar characters - the smoker, the drinker, the kid proudly clutching a dead possum, and a mischievous dog relieving itself in the wrong place. Through humour and detail, the work offers a playful yet pointed commentary on small-town culture and the rituals surrounding hunting in Aotearoa.
Oh Mai Mai
Gemma Baldock
Mixed Media / Original Collage
450mm x 450mm
$1,500.00
Oh Mai Mai takes a light-hearted look at duck shooting season - a duck mid-fall, a shocked onlooker, and a keen little dog ready for action. It’s a familiar scene from rural New Zealand, full of drama, humour, and a touch of chaos.
