Belinda Mason

My name is Belinda Mason. I live and work from my studio at home in Balclutha, South Otago. Born and raised in South Otago, I returned home after living away since the end of high school. After a varied career in everything from radio to teaching, I took some time for myself to grow my creativity and completed a BVA at Otago Polytechnic Dunedin School of Art in 2022, majoring in painting.
My work is based in my love of plants and flowers and finding new ways to express this in colour and light. Although I love and am influenced by the Impressionists, my work also is a result of self-discovery and letting the final work speak for itself. I believe that my art is also a reflection of my deep connection with the natural world and the result of growing up in the breath-taking New Zealand landscape.
Although watercolour remains a favourite medium, I also love working in oils on canvas, drawn to the creamy textures and the ability of oils to be moved around the surface. This has allowed me to lose the sharp edges and complicated lines of realism, and in its place leave an impression of the subject, evoking the fleeting moments of light and colour that often go unnoticed.
